Description:

Visualising AI is a Google DeepMind initiative that seeks to foster conversations about AI and make it more accessible to the public by commissioning artists to create open-source imagery. The collection features 3D works from world-class creators, exploring AI’s societal impact across fields like robotics, neuroscience, ethics, and safety.

As part of their 2024 selection of artists, I was given the theme of human responsibility, for which I collaborated with researcher Will Hawkins.

I chose to represent machine learning as a human-machine system. I believe it’s more accurate to view it as a form of symbiosis given that although these models involve increasing levels of automation, a significant amount of human labor is still required for tasks like data enrichment, decision-making in algorithm design and adjustments, and data governance practices.

About Google DeepMind:

Google DeepMind is a leading AI research lab known for groundbreaking advancements in artificial intelligence. It pioneered deep reinforcement learning and achieved major milestones like AlphaGo, the first AI to beat a Go world champion.

The forming particle clusters represent how data is processed in the latent space of unsupervised machine learning models, as the computer starts to recognize patterns.

The intervention of hands illustrates human involvement in tweaking the algorithm, emphasizing the interaction between the two systems—the push and pull, and the mutual influence they exert on each other.
